The Art of TOM – Bringing it The ‘Traditional’ Way

CIRKUS AND OGILVY AUCKLAND REVEAL TOM THE OLDEN DAYS WAY!

Creative Director Rupert Hancock at Ogilvy & Mather Auckland approached Cirkus to help build an animated film to amaze and astound for Church Road Winery, as they prepare to launch their vintage 2013 range of exclusive TOM wines.
The team, with Boxer Anna Lee at the helm, took the traditional 2D animation approach when tasked to visually interpret a poem that describes Church Road’s winemaking process and directed the team in this creation of “The Art of TOM”. The foundation of the animation are 70 bespoke illustrations, which were gifted by Church Road’s winemaker Chris Scott to invited guests at the TOM pre-launch event.
After presenting and approval of each of the 70 frames to the Agency and Client, Freakshow Ty Jepsen commenced to cell-animate the desired action of the frames of the approved storyboard , such as the wine being swished about in a glass or hands morphing into a bird.
These animation passes guided our illustrators Ballerina Rebecca Tan and Vittorio Suhendro to create the appropriate coloured in-between frames. Therefore, every single frame of this film was digitally painted by the team!
